DIETI IN FIGURES
The Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (DIETI) is one of the 26 Departments of University of Naples Federico II.
Our University is entitled to “Federico II” who was the Emperor of the Holy Western Empire, Frederick II of Swabia in 1224, who founded this Lay University with an Imperial Edict; to date Federico II is the oldest and most long-lived of the public universities in the world.
Federico II is currently one of the largest Italian universities (in terms of number of students: about 80,000, and in terms of the number of degree courses: 73 Bachelor's Degrees and 66 Master's plus 8 single-cycle.
With about 17,000 students and 18 degree courses and 2 professionalizing degree courses and 22 master's degree courses of which 1 single cycle also the College of Engineering is also one of the largest Colleges of Federico II, and as a School of Engineering the largest in central and southern Italy.
DIETI is one of the 5 Departments that make up the College of the School of Engineering.
Currently directed by prof. Giorgio Ventre, DIETI (Department of Excellence by MIUR decree) with its figures is bigger than several small/medium Italian universities:
- 13 scientific sectors
- More than 140 Professors and Researchers
- 33 among Technical and Administrative Staff
- More than 100 Research Collaborators (Young Contract Researchers)
- More than 50 PhD students
- More than 50 Laboratories
- More than 80 Research projects
- 15 Degree courses (8 undergraduate and 7 undergraduate)
- 3 Doctoral Schools
- More than 7,500 active students
DEGREE COURSES
In the current system of university education, the didactic offer is organized as an academic program better known as 3 + 2: that is, after a three-year course leading the student to obtain the Bachelor’s Degree, it is possible to continue on a course of further two years for the achievement of the Master's Degree.
Furthermore, a three-year Professional Degree in Mechatronic Engineering was launched at DIETI three years ago; this course does not allow direct access to a subsequent Master's, but is directly linked to the 'needs' of the world of Industry 4.0.
The whole DIETI academic didactic offer is summarized in the table

For all degrees, looking at the careers of Master's graduates, we observe a very high success rate. Already at a national level, Master's degree graduates in the Information sector, from whatever university they come from, have a very high employment rate. More than 93% find stable work, while the average first job salary is on average over € 1500 (source: AlmaLaurea consortium).
There are ample opportunities for thesis and internship opportunities in Italian and foreign companies, Erasmus projects with the most important European Universities, international cooperation projects with very important industrial groups and research centers worldwide, for all degrees and at all levels.
Furthermore, the Master's Degree programs include some Double Master's Degree opportunities: in a nominal time of two + one year (not four) a double degree is obtained, even with foreign institutions.
More than 50 research laboratories of high and recognized quality and prestige are currently accredited; some of these are leaders in specific research worldwide and carry out their activities thanks to the financial support from DIETI, as well as from European and international projects or from national and foreign companies.
TIPS FOR STUDENTS
- Follow the courses carefully from the start, trying to actively participate in lessons
- Study at home during course periods: it is useful for
- understanding the next lessons
- being able to prepare for exams without too much trouble
- Prepare in time for the mid-term tests of those courses requiring them
- a positive result in these tests facilitates passing the exams
- Pay attention to the prerequisites between courses and exams
- interact with the Student Secretariat for administrative / bureaucratic aspects
- contact the Degree Course Coordinators for everything related to didactics
For five Bachelor’s degrees we have common courses for the first and a good part of the second year, while the other two degrees have an overlap of about 80%.
This means that the transfer/transition from one degree program to another, at least up to the second year, does not cause any career 'hitch' to the student who decides that a discipline is more 'fascinating' (interesting, attractive, ...) than another!
And now, if you want to play a game, try following the DIETI@360° experience. You will be immersed in a VR experience in 7 of our Laboratories.
- 7 immersive videos, one for each Degree Course
- A funny and playful aptitude test proposes the most suitable path for the student and a friend accompanies him/her in a virtual reality experience in 360° video, illustrating the specific research topics of the course and the opportunities for using the results
- A cardboard and a smartphone will be enough to be totally immersed in one of the DIETI laboratories
- The students will be able to listen, watch, move freely, in the places where they will probably spend their future
