Fundamental band limits of electromagnetic nano resonators

 

A new study published in the prestigious ACS Photonics journal has resolved an important controversy over the fundamental band limits of electromagnetic nano resonators.

Achieving a strong field-matter iteration in small volumes is one of the most important goals of nano-photonics. To this end, promising results have recently been achieved using both metal and high refractive index resonators, paving the way for applications in non-linear optics, photovoltaics, photoluminescence and sensors.

Despite this, the reduction of the size of a resonator determines a reduction of its band (and therefore of its speed of operation). This trade-off is known as the "Chu limit" of an electromagnetic radiator.

Plasmonic nanostructures with singular geometries apparently seem to violate this limit. A collaboration between the group of Prof. Andrea Alù who leads the Photonics Initiative at the Advanced Science Research Center of the City University of New York and Prof. Carlo Forestiere of DIETI has resolved this controversy.

First author of this study is Dr. Mariano Pascale who recently discussed the ITEE PhD thesis at DIETI.
